This is a first call for communication concerning the conference “Visual methods for research in communication” to be held on December 3rd and 4th, 2018 at the University of La Laguna in Tenerife, Spain.

Researchers in the human and social sciences who use visual methods, generally rely on the contribution of visual anthropology or film sociology. Indeed, within the human sciences, anthropology is among the first disciplines to integrate images into research protocols through ethnographic field work - including the creation of corpora of iconographic documents - and to mobilize successive generations of researchers.


After Robert Flaherty's film Nanook of the North, the first film to be a reference of the community of visual anthropologists, Evans-Pritchard's written and iconic work with The Nuer (1940) and those of Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson with Balinese Character (1942) participate in the historical base of the anthropo-visual approach. Margaret Mead specifies in epistemological terms The Principles of Visual Anthropology (1975), which till today allows anthropologists and sociologists interested in visual methods to assert with less difficulty their singularity with respect to researchers, sometimes unfriendly within the academic world of research.


The British researcher Sarah Pink (Pink, 2003), in her ambitious undertaking to present an international inventory of visual anthropology, describes that academic recognition extends by an influence in other disciplines such as psychology. The information and communication sciences, recognized institutionally in France in the 1970s, are not immune to this influence. Their contemporary approach of fertile and interdisciplinary crossroads at the beginning of the 21st century (Ibanez Bueno, 2006) made integrated approaches in the sciences of art or in psychology, as in this research. In the disciplinary association mobilized here, the "use of visual traces for the description of present and past lifestyles of specific communities" (Leeuwen, Jewitt, 2001) is fully assumed and surpassed by the joint research of 'a deep reflexivity' (MacDougall, 1998) within an evolutionary visual methodology and its aim, protocols and experiments.


Photographic, audiographic and video recordings have been used for many years in scientific research, particularly in a context of mediation. Anthropologists have developed methods, techniques of implementation and description, and analysis of field recordings (De Brigard, 1979) (De France, 1982). The aim being, in this case often double: allowing their use both in scientific (re)source, as in exhibition work in the form of documentary film (Lardeau, 1995). The democratization of recording and processing tools, the development of specific devices (or the diversion of existing devices) lead researchers to create and exploit many audiovisual recordings (whether visual, auditory or the correlation of the two).


Simple trace recording:

- completing (or replacing) taking notes,
- facilitating collaborative work,
- allowing to observe elements that cannot be identified in live,
- illustrating, materializing experiences,
- memorizing a point of view on the experience to postpone (avoid?) a work of verbalization of the context, the content of the experiment,

to the creation of recordings as experimental sources (Lamboux-Durand, 2016).

These (re) audio-visual sources are used both in a very empirical way without specific methods than in a very constructed and supported way, promoting their scientific justification.


In the wake of ‘postmodern’ anthropology initiated by Clifford and Marcus, ethnography is no longer considered as "the experience and the interpretation of another circumscribed reality but rather as a constructive negotiation involving at least two conscious subjects politically significant "(Clifford, quoted by Copans, 2002). They suggest the development of new experiential, interpretive, dialogic and polyphonic styles (which can contribute to a form of triangulation of results). Anthropological knowledge based on a systematic description has thus lost its authority in favor of an ethnographic description based more on experiences, hence the development of a new visual anthropology in which the image is used in a more subjective and reflexive way so as to better describe and understand the sensory experiences of the Other (Pink, 2007).…


Knowing that today, the iconic results can not be limited to a classic filmic narration. Other non-linear and interactive forms are appropriate, such as research hypermedia.


The purpose of this call - as an extension of the collective work "Visual Methods and Digital Worlds? "(Ibanez Bueno et al., 2017) - is to be able to highlight different research practices, in order to move towards a collection of tools, methods, field observations and / or experiments, highlighting the potential of visual methods in the field of scientific studies in SHS. Visual methods are understood here as the appropriation of image methods in their development and integration of digital tools (Pink, 2003) (Ribeiro, Bairon, 2007)


To what extent should the protocol of recording implementation be framed so that it can be used? To what extent does the context of the experience influence the recording and the results obtained? Are there methods, methodology or tools that can be generalized? Can (or should) we define (systematically) a method or methodology specific to the context of the experiment?   

In addition to describing experiences, methods such as the Parkour method (Petrova, 2017) or resitu-subjective (Schmitt, 2012), contributions can address other dimensions (ethical, legal or otherwise). The distribution of text transcripts do not have the same status as that of photographs or videograms. In what framework can we use visual sources that have not systematically received the informed consent (implicit or explicit) of people in the context of research?

The epistemological approach is intentionally open and not reserved for a confirmed tradition of visual sociology or anthropological documentary. This scientific debate initiated by researchers in information and communication sciences is open to all disciplines of humanities and social sciences, digital humanities and research in the arts and driven by a desire for mutual enrichment.



The Canary Islands are both connected to Africa by their geography and history and to Europe, as a Spanish autonomous region of two million inhabitants with a world-renowned attractiveness. Before going for the first time to the Indies became Americas, Christopher Columbus made a last stop in Tenerife. The archipelago is an important step on this axis of commercial relations between Europe and America. Intercontinental socio-economic realities and symbolic are thus part of the spirit of fruitful and international exchanges desired by this conference.
In the same week of December 2018, the University of La Laguna hosts for the tenth edition of the Congreso Internacional Latina de Comunicación Social initiated by the Revista Latina de Comunicación Social. We thank those responsible for supporting the research on Visual Methods that have already allowed a dedicated session in 2016 and the co-publication Visual methods and digital worlds, Ibanez Bueno, J., Chabert, G., Lamboux-Durand, A., Wanono, N. (ed.), 2017. On the initiative of the research groups LLSETI and ELLIADD, the dynamics of work is developing with the support of other laboratories of four countries. Scientific synergies are expected between the two events in the architecturally bold buildings of the Faculties of Communication and Fine Arts. Under favorable conditions, it is possible to participate in both events:
